Division Avenue phase 2 to build on earlier safety work; construction slated for this summer

City staff presented an update April 1 on Division Avenue corridor improvements (phase 2), part of a multi-year pedestrian-safety program supported by the Children Pedestrian Safety grant administered through the Local Highway Technical Assistance Council.
Rachel McKinley summarized completed phase one work (2023) — which removed a center turn lane, added a wider planter, improved sidewalks and bike facilities, and addressed snow-storage and ADA-compliance problems — and described phase two designs (Superior to Pine) that provide six-foot sidewalks, six-foot planter strips for street trees, ADA-compliant curb ramps, and low-maintenance planting (a clover seed mix pilot) to reduce maintenance burdens on adjacent property owners.
McKinley said the design is complete and out to bid, with construction scheduled for this summer after school lets out and final landscaping to follow in the fall. Council and staff discussed tree species selection, long-term maintenance responsibilities (the city will assume three years of maintenance after planting), and the potential to coordinate future phases with other multimodal projects to create continuous multi-use paths in coming years.
