Candidate Christopher Evans introduces platform; resident questions high bussing fees

Christopher Evans introduced himself during the public comment period as a candidate for the Hartland-Lakeside J3 School District board seat up for election on April 7. "Kids have to be safe first. That's non-negotiable," Evans said, listing safety, health and operations as his priorities and noting he has three children in the district.

A second speaker, who identified himself as Justin and described himself as a resident and parent, questioned the district's pay-to-ride bussing fees. Justin said the charges have grown to "astronomical" levels, discourage families from using optional routes and asked, "Why is the district trying to profit from these families?" He told the board he had reached out to staff for explanation and sought clarity about where fees are directed and why neighboring districts did not charge comparable amounts.

Board members acknowledged the concern and later in the meeting staff and the superintendent reported progress on bussing changes: the feeder-district consortium renegotiated start/stop times, the previous shuttle arrangement will end, and route tiers were reshuffled. Staff said some bus routes and start times will change next year and that shared-route arrangements are intended to reduce costs, but the transcript records board discussion of the policy direction rather than a detailed accounting of pay-to-ride revenue.

The resident requested follow-up and asked how to place agenda items for future discussion; board members noted individual members can request items for a future meeting with the board president's concurrence.
