Board hears ELA adoption process and school pilots; high schools selected HMH into Literature

District curriculum staff briefed the board on the high‑school English‑language‑arts core‑resource adoption process that followed Virginia House Bill 2777 requirements and an eight‑week classroom pilot across three high schools.
Mr. Sheerer, the district’s high‑school ELA specialist, said each high school selected two pilot teachers who implemented different HQIM options with fidelity. Teachers, administrators and student feedback were collected through surveys and school‑level consensus meetings; community feedback was solicited during January. "All three high schools independently selected HMH in the literature," Sheerer reported, and the recommendation reflects the "collective voice of our high school stakeholders."
If the board approves the recommendation, the division plans to deliver HMH Into Literature materials to the three high schools in May, provide initial training in June and additional training in August so teachers are prepared for full implementation in the 2026–27 school year.
Board members asked whether the adoption prescribes a fixed book list or preserves teacher choice. Staff said required texts and excerpts are identified while other selections remain optional to allow teacher flexibility; staff agreed to provide the board with the proposed book list on request. Members also asked about print vs. digital balance; presenters said HMH is designed to work with both print and digital components and that teachers will have print resources for core reading and writing activities.
The recommendation will next appear on the action agenda for board approval; staff emphasized the adoption completes alignment of ELA core resources across grades K–12.
