The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) has begun a special-education audit of Northumberland County Public Schools covering school years 2023–2026, superintendent Dr. Leslie told the board.
"This audit is going to last a week, but it's really going to last a year because once we finish the audit, there's going to be a year of monitoring," Dr. Leslie said, describing a VDOE monitor who will receive periodic reports and check the district’s corrective actions. She said the review grew out of prior shortfalls and will examine policies, procedures and recordkeeping to ensure the district meets federal, state and local requirements for special-education services.
Dr. Leslie and finance staff said they are cooperating with VDOE and plan to update the board regularly; they also described parallel county-level financial audits that will examine fiscal records and reconciliations. "This team is committed," Dr. Leslie said, asking the board for continued support as staff implement required changes.
What’s next: District staff will work with the assigned VDOE monitor on corrective-action reporting and will present periodic updates to the board during the monitoring year.
