Sheriff's annual report: calls for service down slightly; 63 overdose deaths reported

Sheriff John presented highlights from the sheriff's office annual report. He said calls for service across Cass County declined slightly year over year — from roughly 48,4xx in 2024 to 46,373 in 2025 — and explained that calls-for-service include motorist assists, traffic crashes, reports and other patrol activity.
Turning to fatal overdoses, the sheriff reported 63 total deaths for the year and said 46 of those had narcotics in the system; of the 63, 41 were investigated by Fargo, eight by West Fargo, two by the highway patrol and one by the county agency. "For overall Cass County, it's not good," he said, adding that narcotics trafficking contributes to the problem and that the county drug task force and federal interdiction unit are seizing quantities of narcotics entering the community.
On drug-forensic reporting, commissioners noted a data quirk: fentanyl-powder grams appeared in the 2024 line in the draft report and the sheriff's office said it would check and correct any reporting omissions or inconsistencies before finalizing the annual report.
Sheriff John said the office will provide a hard copy of the annual report and that the full report can be reviewed in detail at a future rotational meeting.
