District schedules April–June work sessions to shape strategic plan

Superintendent Don told the Jefferson School District 14J board that the district has distributed a strategic-planning survey to staff and community stakeholders, including the student success committee, Jefferson service integration team, the elementary PTO, the Jefferson Chamber of Commerce and the city council, and that flyers were handed out at parent-teacher conferences.
"We sent it out through ParentSquare to all of our parents and guardians," Don said, adding that the survey was also placed in the district newsletter and a copy is in the board packet. He set the deadline for returning surveys at the end of April and said school staff will run student activities and data reviews before board sessions.
The board discussed the work-session schedule and agreed that April should be reserved for an activity and data review, May for examining survey results and revising mission and vision statements, and June for reviewing priorities, goals and strategies. The board tentatively set a May 18 work session at 5:30 p.m. and discussed holding an earlier session the week of April 20 so members could attend and staff and community members could participate.
Don urged the board to place the sessions on the calendar so they can be publicized and attended by interested staff and community members. "We need to spend another work session reviewing and revising the mission and vision statements based on survey data," he said. The sessions are open to the public and district staff, Don added.
Next steps outlined by the superintendent include administering the survey to middle- and high-school students, holding school-level activities and data reviews, then bringing draft mission and vision statements and proposed priorities back to the board for revision and adoption.
