Garcia said the committee weighed attendance patterns, teacher planning needs, and collective bargaining implications before presenting two calendar options.
Superintendent Sandoval recommended the board choose one of the two four‑day options and confirmed staff will follow collective bargaining procedures to preserve employees’ contract hours and compensation. Garcia said both calendars keep total contract hours intact and that scheduled make‑up days, if needed, would occur at the end of the year (June 1–4) so the district remains a four‑day calendar during instructional weeks.
Board discussion focused on family and staff impacts, athletics scheduling and possible late‑day practices, and childcare implications when holiday Mondays or Fridays require swaps in some months. Board Vice President Dr. Kimberly Leia and Board President Paul Gonzalez emphasized that district staff will work with bargaining units on contract language and operational details.
On roll call, several members voted in favor and the board then passed a motion to adopt the four‑day week with Fridays off. The superintendent and calendar committee will bring final technical revisions and operational language—such as parent notification, bus schedules, and lunch/snack service plans—back to the board in advance of implementation.
The board’s next steps include negotiating contract language with employee bargaining units, finalizing the published calendar, and communicating childcare and transportation guidance to families before the start of the 2026–27 school year.
