Parent urges board to broaden criteria for accelerated math placement

"I would ask the district consider identifying those students who might not qualify on the rubric but who for example have scored well in math such as an A or above and teacher recommendation to encourage them to enter accelerate math but on the condition that they perform some sort of summer enrichment," Castro said, proposing a conditional pathway with parent and student commitment.
Castro said his older children performed well in classroom math but did not meet rubric thresholds based on standardized tests and described the rubric’s weighting of assessment points as limiting access. He asked the board to consider adjustments that would value classroom performance, participation and teacher recommendations alongside test scores.
Board members acknowledged the comment; the district said K‑OGAT testing and rubric processes are ongoing and that results and placement policies will be forthcoming as the district completes assessments and program reviews.
