Hazel Park School Board hears budget briefing; staff warns food-service bid, EV bus grant and staffing approvals at risk without quorum
Summary
At a special workshop called to order at 4:03 p.m., presenter Don Sobe briefed the Hazel Park School Board on zero-based budgeting, declining grant revenue and anticipated legal-fee pressures; staff warned that failing to approve a food-service bid would push procurement into May and could jeopardize summer meal service.
The Hazel Park School Board convened a special workshop at 4:03 p.m., where presenter Don Sobe reviewed the district’s budget process and warned that expiring grants and ongoing legal fees will put pressure on the tentative budget. Because a quorum was not present, the board could not take binding votes on procurement or personnel items and adjourned after the presentation.
Sobe told board members the district is using GFOA (Government Finance Officers Association) guidance and a zero-based budgeting approach to align finance and instruction and to assemble a tentative draft budget. “We’re in the middle of the budget process right now. Today was the first day of having discussions and hearing from the cost center leaders,” Sobe said, noting the exercise is meant to open input that the business office and superintendent will fold into a tentative draft.
