Grosse Pointe Farms honors public safety staff for rescues and crisis responses

GROSSE POINTE FARMS, Mich. — Grosse Pointe Farms presented seven merit awards to public safety personnel in a city council ceremony that highlighted a series of emergency responses in 2025, including fraud prevention, vehicle pursuits, missing-person searches, cardiac revival and a water rescue.
The presentation opened with the mayor and council in attendance as an unnamed city presenter explained the awards program and called forward recipients. The presenter said the panel of reviewing supervisors selected seven incidents "deemed worthy of public presentation" and noted some honorees were not present.
The most consequential citation recognized officers who intervened Dec. 16 to stop an attempted Bitcoin scam targeting an elderly resident. According to the presenter, a caller reported that her vulnerable sister was on a phone call being instructed to withdraw funds and deposit them into a Bitcoin account. The presenter said PSO Ross traced the victim via OnStar to a Chase Bank in Harper Woods and, working with responding officers, canceled the transaction just before $15,000 was transferred. "The quick thinking of all officers involved saved the elderly resident from being defrauded of $15,000," the presenter said.
Other awards cited a July 11 response to a reported stolen vehicle in which officers located a red Hyundai driving erratically, set a perimeter after pursuit was ended according to policy, requested K9 assistance and arrested two juvenile suspects without incident; and recognition for dispatcher Haley Adams for a June 25 911 call involving an armed, suicidal 18-year-old at the Grosse Pointe Park Public Library. The presenter said Adams located a driver's-license photo, kept the caller on the line for more than 15 minutes, provided updates to officers and helped secure the firearm.
A director's unit award credited a team for locating an elderly resident with Parkinson's disease on Oct. 11 after she wandered into a beach area and showed signs of hypothermia; the presenter said officers coordinated a drone-assisted search, stabilized the subject at the scene and transferred her to awaiting medics. A separate citation described a Sept. 3 cardiac arrest in a residence where officers applied an AED, delivered a shock that restored a heartbeat and assisted MedStar EMS on arrival.
The ceremony also honored a multi-agency response on Aug. 4 when a vehicle entered Lake St. Clair. The presenter named officers and a motorist who reported the incident for locating and pulling a woman from the water; after on-scene resuscitation she confirmed she had attempted to end her life and was transported to St. John Hospital. Responders included Grosse Pointe Farms units, neighboring city units and regional K9 and EMS resources, the presenter said.
The awards portion closed with the presentation of the public safety employee of the year to Lieutenant Veronica Cashion for leadership, a lengthy career that included rising from dispatcher to lieutenant, work supervising field training and recruiting, and returning to duty after a serious on-the-job injury. "For her tireless work ethic, leadership and service to the community, Lieutenant Veronica Cashion is a most deserving recipient of the employee of the year award," the presenter said.
The ceremony concluded with thanks to Mayor Dulli, the council and judicial staff who assisted at the event. No policy actions or votes were taken during the awards presentation.
Next steps: recipients were commended and no follow-up actions were announced at the meeting.
