Selectmen approve hires, donations, water rule changes and accept resignation at March 24 meeting

The North Brookfield Board of Selectmen approved several administrative items March 24, including personnel actions, donations, water-department rule changes, and a resignation.
Personnel: The board voted unanimously to hire Justin Stearns for a driver/laborer position in the highway department after Stearns described his local background and intent to obtain required licenses. The board also unanimously appointed Pamela Ducas as collector clerk following a recommendation by Kim Bett and a brief introduction from Ducas.
Donations: The board accepted an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) donated by the North Brookfield Ambulance Service for use on fire apparatus and accepted a Kubota tractor donated by the North Brookfield Railroad Corporation. Both donations were approved by unanimous voice vote.
Water rules and billing: The board read two proposals from the Board of Water Commissioners (Tim Mason, chairman) to amend rules and regulations: add a $70 fee for cross-connection/backflow inspections and a $50 fee for final water/sewer reads, and change water billing to quarterly issuance based on the previous three months' usage instead of biannual billing. After brief discussion, the board approved amending the rules and the fee schedule.
Resignation: The board read a letter from Thomas A. Bessette offering his resignation as a member of the Board of Engineers and interim Deputy Chief of the North Brookfield Fire Department, effective April 1, 2026. The board accepted the resignation and thanked Bessette for years of service.
Other operational notes: Selectmen approved minutes and multiple warrants (payroll, school, fire/highway, debt and interest, general fund, wastewater upgrade and postage) as presented. The board also announced upcoming town election candidate filings and a special town meeting on April 17 at 6:00 p.m.
