Board delegates prom-location decision to prom committee after debate; middle-school Level Up Band spotlighted

The Bath County Board of Education on March 23 voted to let the Bath County Prom Committee decide the high-school prom location after hearing presentations from teachers and the prom sponsor describing costs, student preferences and logistics.
Prom discussion: Prom organizers told the board the Clay Community Center rental is about $1,600 and that decorations and related items the committee identified would add roughly $3,300, while transforming the high‑school gym into a comparable venue would add an estimated $5,000 in one-time costs for tarps, ceiling treatments, decorations and setup. Organizers also cited instructional impacts: the junior-class sponsor said being out of her classroom for several days to transform the gym would remove important instruction time in a tested subject area. Several board members said they value tradition but acknowledged students’ preferences and the practical differences between venues; the board voted to delegate the final choice to the prom committee. The board also noted transportation options (busing used previously) to help students reach an off-campus venue, and organizers said they expect about 300 students to attend.
Student spotlight and music program: Earlier in the regular meeting the board spotlighted a new after-school program called Level Up Band, introduced by Miss Haley Collier (middle school band director) with support from Mr. Nick Brewer (high-school band director). Collier described Level Up Band as a twice-weekly after-school program that provides small-group and one-on-one instruction to help students learn instruments who missed initial band entry; she listed participating students and cited district band GPAs and national research on music participation and test scores.
What the board decided: The motion to let the prom committee determine the prom location passed by voice vote. The student-spotlight presentation concluded with certificates for four students and a brief summary of the program’s goals.
