Student leaders outline May 2 'Wake Up Walton & Verona' volunteer day

Student members of the Wake Up Walton & Verona planning committee told the board the annual community service event is set for Saturday, May 2.
"This year, Wake Up Walton and Verona will take place on Saturday, May 2nd," said Maline Ryan, identifying herself as one of nine student organizers. She described volunteers performing landscaping tasks — cleaning beds, spreading mulch and planting flowers — at senior residences at no cost to participants. The program provides a sponsored breakfast and lunch for volunteers.
Ryan told the board the program has grown from about 70 volunteers to 208 in the past year and that committee members personally contacted 41 senior households last year to line up service visits. The committee also uses sponsorship levels to underwrite event costs: a level‑one donation (recorded in the transcript) of $150 or more secures a business name on volunteer T‑shirts; a level‑two donation of $250 or more also includes banner recognition at the high school.
Board members thanked student volunteers and staff for organizing the program and for outreach work that connects students with senior residents. The board noted its thanks to Dr. Baker and to staff who support the event.
