Wa-Nee board approves 2027 school bus purchases, highlights propane savings

The Wa-Nee Community Schools Board of Trustees voted unanimously to approve the district’s recommended 2027 school bus purchases after a presentation by transportation staff.

Transportation lead Amy Rosa told the board the district’s propane program has produced significant operating savings. "We are very pleased with our propane program. Without getting too much into the weeds, we are saving lots of money with propane," she said, and explained that new diesel costs, emission-related compliance risks, and rising technology costs were factors in the district’s continued move toward propane. Rosa also explained spec changes for the upcoming purchase (removal of front AC on some buses) and that expected tariff rebates and vendor credits would reduce the net purchase cost after the board approved a PO at the maximum amount.

Board member David Law moved to accept the bus bids; Brian Topping seconded the motion. The motion carried 7-0. Rosa summarized the expected fleet mix after delivery as approximately 32 propane, 17 diesel and 7 gas vehicles. She said delivery timing is expected in December and that staff will reassess trade-in decisions once mileage and condition of outgoing vehicles are verified.

Administrators also described anticipated rebates and credits including tariff rebates (total amounts described in the packet) and a $6,000 credit for the district serving as a demonstrator site for a vendor. The board approved the recommendation to proceed with procurement; the final net cost will reflect those rebates and any subsequent credits.
