Board adopts CKLA for K–4 and 'Into Literature' for grades 5–12 to align with state expectations

The school board approved two new English-language-arts curricula after district teachers and administrators completed a multi-month review. Jen explained that the K–4 committee recommended CKLA (Amplify) because it aligns closely with the district's foundational-phonics instruction (UFly/letters training) and provides measurable scorecard dashboards. "This resource directly aligns with what we've been implementing in our letters training," she said.

For grades 5–12 the board approved Into Literature. Administrators said the 5–12 adoption responds in part to a state desk audit that asks districts to identify evidence-based, publisher-supported materials rather than solely teacher-created resources. "We need a named evidence-based resource in place for the audit," an administrator said. Board members discussed implementation supports, training timelines and buy-in; the district will provide May and October in-person training plus coaching and online materials for teachers.

The motions to adopt CKLA for K–4 and Into Literature for grades 5–12 carried; during roll call one board member recorded opposition to each adoption. Administrators acknowledged costs (an estimated budgetary impact in the tens of thousands) but said the committee chose materials they believed best matched instructional priorities and state requirements. The district plans teacher training across the spring and early fall and will stage coaching visits to support fidelity.
