At an Oakdale Joint Unified School District board meeting, several parents and a varsity goalkeeper raised allegations that girls soccer coach Kiko Monz retaliated against players and mishandled booster fundraising.
Ay Al, a senior varsity goalkeeper, told the board that "the coach...was able to take away such an important and sacred year in my life," describing what she said were repeated instances of being benched and a pattern of being singled out. Parent Joe Al said fundraising proceeds from past booster activities had not been accounted for and estimated "it was about $25,000" raised in one campaign that parents say lacked transparent accounting.
The comments included detailed examples: parents described players suspended or benched following travel to outside development programs, assigned jersey numbers before tryouts, and aggressive interactions the parents characterized as belittling or retaliatory. Speakers said some teammates were afraid to come forward.
Jose Sanchez, district staff, responded during the meeting by outlining the formal complaint pathway: the district requests that parents submit a written complaint and said "the district's happy to do so... a written response will be returned to the complainant" after investigation. Board representatives emphasized they cannot disclose personnel actions publicly but encouraged parents to use the district's formal process so the matter can be investigated.
Why it matters: allegations of retaliatory conduct by a coach affect student welfare and may trigger personnel investigations and possible disciplinary action. Parents and student speakers urged prompt, transparent follow-up, while district officials reiterated legal limits on what can be disclosed publicly during an ongoing personnel matter.
Next steps: Board members asked staff to follow up with parents and to accept formal complaints for investigation. The board did not take any formal personnel action during open session; any investigation findings and personnel actions will be handled through the district's internal processes and, where appropriate, law enforcement or mandated reporting channels.
