Bernards Township committee proclaims February 2026 Black History Month

Mayor Dwarte McCarthy read Resolution 2026‑165 recognizing February 2026 as Black History Month and noting its origins with Dr. Carter G. Woodson and the federal observance established in 1976. The resolution cites local historical figures, including Captain Robert Terry and Estelle Terry, who the text identifies as members of the Tuskegee Airmen and notes the couple received the Tuskegee Airmen Congressional Gold Medal in 2022.

Committee members offered brief remarks in support. Brett said he researched this year’s theme, “African Americans and labor,” and highlighted labor organizers from A. Philip Randolph to contemporary workers’ efforts. Jen recalled the 2022 ceremony honoring the Terrys and called the recognition “quite amazing.” Other members described family observances and recommended educational programming that connects local history to broader state and national narratives.

The committee moved, seconded and approved the resolution by voice vote. The motion was carried with aye responses from the attending committee members.

The resolution text, as read into the record, encourages residents to learn about and celebrate Black history and notes New Jersey’s designation of 2026 as a year of Black history. The committee and staff said they will consider timing and outreach to increase advance notice for next year’s observance so local events can be planned earlier in the calendar.
