Animal shelter reports 84 spay/neuter cases and plans campus‑style expansion

Tara, speaking for the Truth or Consequences animal shelter on March 11, reported the state spay/neuter grant has supported 84 animals since January, of which nine were adult shelter animals. The shelter is using grant funds for surgeries and vaccines and has also received $8,700 from a recent fundraising event.
"We raised $8,700, which is about $1,000 more than last time," Tara said, adding the shelter will reserve donations to outfit a planned facility expansion. She described plans to move from an on‑site addition to a prefabricated 'campus' approach with separate buildings for sick animals and adoptable animals to reduce cross‑contamination and speed intake.
Tara also described recent transports that moved 11 local animals by plane to partner rescues and said additional transports are planned for May and August. The shelter reported it remains overcrowded despite transfers and is working with regional partners (Best Friends, Project Fetch and others) on transports and adoption placements.
The commission did not take formal action on the shelter report but the update was heard during department head reports; staff said grant funds also include a $5,000 equipment allocation for feral cat traps and vaccines.
