District reports enrollment rise to 2,376 and mixed MASA gains; officials say math growth lagging but climbing

Director of Learning Services Mr. Gatsby told board members the district’s head count is 2,376 students and that funded enrollment — the number used for state funding — is 2,263, meaning actual head count is roughly 30.5 students above funded levels.
On assessments, Gatsby presented a comparative analysis between the 23-24 and 24-25 reporting periods. He highlighted several notable school- and grade-level changes: third-grade math at South Mountain Elementary rose about 23 percent from the prior year; Moriarty Elementary’s fifth-grade math rose roughly 20 percent; and Route 66 showed a 12 percent decline in third-grade math while posting a 25 percent gain in third-grade ELA. At the district level, Gatsby said third grade showed a 5 percent gain in math and a 12 percent gain in ELA.
Gatsby also summarized middle-school performance, noting mixed results: sixth-grade math across both middle schools declined 2 percent while ELA grew 5 percent; seventh-grade math improved 6 percent and ELA 5 percent. He said several classes had students who missed proficiency thresholds by only one question and that targeted interventions may close those gaps.
"We finished our student ones count. We are up to 2,376," Gatsby said. He attributed the district’s ELA strength to recent investments in structured literacy and the science of reading and said the district is focusing next on targeted math interventions.
Board members asked clarifying questions about the data and funding counts; Gatsby provided written charts and noted hard-copy reports that compare funded numbers and historical trends.
Next steps: the district will continue targeted math interventions, monitor cohorts closely, and present more detailed data in upcoming meetings and work sessions. No policy changes or formal votes were linked to the assessment presentation at the Aug. 19 meeting.
