Walla Walla Public Schools highlights volunteers and how to sign up during April appreciation month

Walla Walla Public Schools is marking April as volunteer appreciation month and encouraging residents to sign up to support classrooms, events and student services.
Beth Swanson, who joined the district podcast to discuss volunteerism, said the district recognizes volunteers who have contributed more than 100 hours — 15 people met that threshold this year — and that “we have 600 people in our community who are volunteering in our schools today.” She added that, over the past year, “over 3,000 needs have been filled” across activities such as food bags, teacher assistance, field-trip chaperoning, recess duty and Miles Club.
Swanson described how residents can begin volunteering: visit any Walla Walla Public Schools school website, click the VIP logo, create an account, select the schools of interest and review posted needs submitted by teachers, school administration and PTAs.
“We're at over 6,000 volunteer hours that we have for the school year,” Swanson said, urging volunteers to help the district reach a community goal of 7,000 hours.
The district noted spring is a particularly busy volunteer period because of field trips and school pictures, and encouraged residents to check school websites for immediate opportunities.
The district did not specify a deadline for meeting the 7,000-hour target or a list of specific shift times; volunteers are directed to individual school VIP pages for current openings and requirements.
