Several employees and classified staff told the board Monday that compensation and longevity pay deserve urgent attention as the district finalizes budget plans.
Wendy Riley, a dedicated substitute teacher, said substitutes have not received a pay raise since October 2021 and contrasted Torrance Unified's rates with neighboring districts. "What was already a modest compensation has become unsustainable," Riley said, noting LAUSD and other nearby districts have increased substitute pay.
Plumbing and facilities staff also urged longevity pay and recognition for essential trades employees. Thomas Grant, a district plumber with more than 23 years of service, described hazardous emergency work and called longevity pay "long overdue" to help attract and retain experienced maintenance staff.
Trustees thanked speakers and said they were listening; board members noted the district is working with bargaining units and budget constraints will shape any changes. No action was taken at the meeting; staff said compensation and negotiated settlements affect the multi-year budget projections presented elsewhere on the agenda.
