Superintendent: Summer programs served about 1,500 students; trustees praise Fallbrook STEM Academy

Superintendent Hazel reported to the board that the district's summer offerings — including a summer camp, the migrant education program and extended school year services (ESY) — involved about 1,500 students in total.

"In total over our summer program about 1,500 students taking advantage of either the um the summer super summer camp ... and then also our ESY and our migrant education program," Superintendent Hazel said, describing the scale of participation and praising staff engagement.

Trustee Pavlla said she visited Fallbrook STEM Academy to observe the migrant summer program and ESY, and spoke as a former migrant student. She praised the programs' rigor and the staff, noting students were engaged in poetry and math and that many classrooms emphasized hands-on learning rather than use of computers. "This is nothing like that," she said, contrasting current programming with her own memories of limited summer materials.

Trustee Gold, a member of the facilities planning group, urged continued community investment to support long-term facility upgrades so students are excited to attend school and staff can deliver programming at scale.

The board recorded approval of the minutes and then continued to board reports and a scheduled presentation; Superintendent Hazel said attendees would "hear a little bit about" the summer camp in a presentation later in the meeting.
