The neoclassical Cumberland County courthouse on Gillespie Street was built beginning in 1924, completed in 1925 and opened in 1926 as the county’s new seat of government, a presenter narrating the site said. When it opened, the county’s population was about 35,000 and most county offices — from the sheriff’s office to the register of deeds and the jails located on the upper floors — operated from the building.
