Resident criticizes district's involvement in litigation and urges focus on academics

At the start of the Aug. 20 meeting, resident Bruce Fenton addressed the board during public comment to criticize the district's reported participation in litigation concerning state anti-discrimination laws and to urge the superintendent to concentrate on academics.
Fenton identified himself as "Bruce Fenton from Durham" and said he was "sad to see that the school district is joining the suit against this state for the anti-discrimination laws." He said categorizing people by race or skin color is wrong and called certain staff remarks that he recounted "racist and divisive." Fenton told the board he had high hopes for the superintendent as an academic leader and asked that the district "leave the partisan politics out of it" and focus on subjects such as math and science.
The public comment was not followed by a district response addressing the litigation allegation during the meeting record. Board procedure moved the meeting to regular business after public comment.
