Oyster River board approves first reading of generative AI policy; district pilot underway

The Oyster River Coop School District board on Feb. 18 approved a first reading of a draft policy governing the use of generative artificial intelligence in district instruction and operations.

Board members said the policy (identified in materials as EHA) draws on model language and focuses on definitions, appropriate use and data privacy. The policy directs the superintendent to develop an implementation plan — described at the meeting as a living document — that would include guiding principles and classroom-level guidance.

Administrators told the board they began a faculty-led book-study and, in the fall, selected a tool pilot. The district is running a Magic School AI pilot that started Dec. 1 and continues through Feb. 28, with teacher participants across elementary, middle and high school and a student evaluation cohort at the high school. The pilot cost was described as about $6,000; an annual district-wide subscription for all users was estimated at roughly $11,000.

Board members approved the policy for first reading by voice/roll call (seven in favor and the student representative in favor). No final contractual commitment to purchase the tool was made at the meeting; administrators said feedback from teachers and students has been positive and the pilot will inform future procurement decisions.

The policy will return for subsequent readings as the superintendent’s implementation plan is developed and the pilot evaluation is completed.
