At the March 17 meeting, an instructional presenter (identified in the record as Miss Odd) provided a detailed update on the division's work with MTSS and a partnership with the Virginia Tiered System of Supports (VTSS). The presentation described the division's multi-tiered system of supports, an awarded $30,000 VTSS grant and implementation activities to support academic, behavioral and social-emotional needs.
Miss Odd said the grant funded staff training and tools to strengthen classroom systems, diffuse disruptive behavior, implement attendance protocols and enhance data systems. She reported 58 staff members had completed effective classroom systems training and 81 had completed diffusing disruptive behavior training. The division has introduced check-in/check-out (a targeted intervention) with 40 staff trained in February; schools are identifying students who may benefit as the year enters the third and final quarter.
To strengthen attendance work, the division formed an attendance subcommittee including the truancy officer, assistant principals and student services staff, and updated the attendance improvement plan to be more proactive. The presentation also highlighted tiered supports in each school (golden bull tickets, positive office referrals, after-school tutoring and a structured one-lunch period at the high school that offers interventions and enrichment through SmartPass scheduling).
The presenter emphasized monitoring and data-driven decision-making: school-based teams are tracking interventions with increased precision (who provides interventions, frequency/duration and student response) so teams can adjust supports more quickly. The VTSS team list in the presentation included the director of student services, special education coordinator and school psychologist, and the board thanked staff for the implementation effort.
The instructional update concluded with examples of school-level practices and recognition of staff who supported implementation; board members asked no substantive follow-up questions in the meeting record.
