Lewiston council authorizes $104,430 to complete Burt Lips Pool repairs, aims for mid-summer reopening

The Lewiston City Council voted to authorize $104,430 from the assigned building fund to finish maintenance and repairs at Burt Lips Pool, Parks & Recreation Director Justin Glenn told the council.

Glenn outlined completed prep work, a recently replaced membrane roof on the pool house, planned drain repairs that can be handled in-house, lifeguard chair and safety upgrades, and pool-deck and interior flooring work. He said the city previously approved a pool liner contract and is seeking this balance to restore the facility.

"We have an aggressive timeline to get Burt Lips open, but we feel very comfortable we'll be able to get that pool open with these funds in the middle of the summer, 2026," Glenn said.

Councilors asked about operational staffing, long-term maintenance funding and the assigned building fund balance. City Treasurer Amy Gordon said the assigned building fund is part of the shared revenue account and that interest on that account is posted to the general fund; during discussion a fund balance was described by staff as roughly $4.9 million (estimated). Council members said preserving resources for future capital needs will remain a priority.

Councilor Spickelmier moved the authorization and Councilor Wright seconded; the voice vote was unanimous in favor.

The funding will allow the city to complete the pool-liner and pool-deck repairs and address identified safety issues; staff said additional work and photographic updates will be shared with council and the public as the contractor schedule is finalized.

Next step: staff will proceed with the Burt Lips repairs and return updates on schedule and remaining capital needs.
