Public commenters invite district to educator-diversity event and raise safety/liability concerns after Richardson incident

During the public-comment period, speakers used their allotted time to invite board members to school events and to raise safety concerns about a protest-related incident at Richardson.

Jara Rodriguez, who identified themself as a youth leader with "England Congregations United for Change, ICU" and a Royal Valley High School student, invited board members to an educator diversity and pathways convening on Feb. 19 and described the meeting's goals: increase educator diversity and create clearer student pathways to careers and educator representation.

Sheila Houston, a fourth-grade teacher at North Park Elementary, invited the board to a Black History Living Museum presentation scheduled for Feb. 25 and described the event as a scholar-centered cultural celebration.

In a lengthier comment, Miss Negrete described an incident earlier that day at Richardson in which a principal, she said, encouraged students to take protests off campus and to notify parents. Negrete said that sequence of events "opened the liability to the district" and asked the superintendent to investigate whether the principal's actions were district-endorsed. "I asked the superintendent to address this," she said. Board members and the superintendent acknowledged the comment and later discussed staff follow-up.

Later in the meeting board members and the superintendent addressed recent student walkouts and the district's safety posture; Superintendent Ariano emphasized the board's focus on safety and said Education Code 48205 allows an excused absence once per year for protected activity, while underscoring the district's preference that students exercise their voice on campus where possible.
