Oak Grove School District leaders outline plan to find $5 million in cuts after county directive

Mark Evans, associate superintendent of business services, said declining student enrollment has reduced state revenue while operating costs have not fallen, leaving the district "spending more than it brings in." Evans said the Santa Clara County Office of Education directed the district on Sept. 15, 2025, to produce a fiscal stabilization plan and warned the district could run out of money by the 2027–2028 school year if deficits continue.
The district has formed a budget advisory committee made up of parents from each learning community, employee bargaining units, support staff, and management. "The goal is to identify reductions of approximately $5 million," Evans said, specifying about $3 million for the 2026–27 school year and an additional $2 million for 2027–28. District leaders cautioned those reductions will "inevitably impact programs, services, and staffing."
District officials said they will prioritize clear, transparent communication during the review. They have launched a "budget stabilization updates" page on the district website with the latest news, frequently asked questions and answers, and schedules for upcoming meetings where recommendations will be discussed.
Dr. Ivan Chides, superintendent of the Oak Grove School District, invited community participation: "Ask questions, attend meetings, be part of the conversation," he said, noting that the district will share committee recommendations in the coming weeks.
Next steps: the budget advisory committee will develop and share recommendations to the board, and the district will post updates and meeting dates on the stabilization web page.
