Board honors crossing guards as ‘heroes’ who keep students safe

San Bernardino City Unified School District on Wednesday recognized school crossing guards during a special presentation, calling out their everyday role in protecting students on arrival and dismissal routes.
"My name is Maria Garcia and I'm proud to serve SBCUSD as communications manager," Maria Garcia told the board as she opened the ceremony and framed the recognition as part of Crossing Guard Appreciation Day. She invited Robert Durice, team manager with the Crossing Guard Company that supplies the district's guards, to introduce local staff who traveled in for the event.
Durice thanked the board and introduced local supervisors, saying the guards come from "college students, moms, dads, grandparents, retired law enforcement, retired administrators, and teachers" and praising their dedication. "They are our heroes for all that they do," he said.
Board members also commended the guards and highlighted the district's decision to cover the full cost of crossing-guard services. "Our district is one of the few districts that pay for the total cost of crossing guards," board member Mr. Tilman told the audience, saying the board acted to avoid gaps that could endanger students.
The board presented certificates and took group photographs with the guards. The district noted it counts more than 60 crossing guards in its system and encouraged families to look for related content on the district's social media ahead of the formal appreciation day.
