Roswell adds Juneteenth to 2026 holiday calendar; estimated $75,000 cost for overtime

Human Resources Director Trisha Reder told council Juneteenth is an observed state holiday and that seven of the 10 largest cities in Georgia already observe it; Roswell was one of three not observing it in 2026. Staff said the change for calendar-year 2026 would be implemented as an addition rather than a swap because the calendar has already been published, and estimated an approximate additional cost of $75,000 — primarily to cover holiday pay/overtime for public-safety employees.
Council asked staff to provide comparative federal and state holiday lists and surrounding municipalities’ practices before the next council meeting; staff agreed to provide that information. A motion by Council Member Brumley, seconded by Council Member Bon, passed unanimously to include Juneteenth in the 2026 holiday schedule.
Staff noted that for future years the council could adopt a policy to align city holidays with state-observed holidays or otherwise standardize the calendar.
