Board’s adoption committees recommend new AP English and geometry textbooks; vote set for April 21

The school division presented two separate textbook adoption recommendations and asked the board to be prepared to vote on April 21.

For Advanced Placement English courses, Ms. Mompoint said a 20‑member adoption committee evaluated two College Board–approved publishers and recommended BFW instructional materials for AP Seminar (English 10), AP English Language and Composition (11th grade), and AP English Literature and Composition (12th grade). She told the board that textbook copies and digital resources were available for public review for seven weeks and that the committee emphasized alignment with College Board frameworks, teacher supports, scaffolded AP practice, and a robust digital platform. When asked how many students are enrolled in those courses, Ms. Mompoint reported: "In AP Seminar ... we have 520. AP Language Comp, that's 425. And AP Literature and Composition, that's 230 — so, about 1,200." The board will vote on the recommendation at the April 21 meeting.

On geometry, Ms. Mompoint presented a parallel adoption process: four VDOE‑approved publishers were reviewed, copies were made available for public inspection for seven weeks, and a 14‑member committee recommended Math Space for Virginia Geometry aligned to the 2023 SOLs. The purchase would provide classroom sets plus digital materials and seven years of access along with professional learning supports. Implementation planning and teacher training were described as next steps pending final board approval.

Board members thanked adoption committee members and asked that the board receive the formal motions and material prior to the April 21 vote.
