Gatesville ISD trustees approve audit firm, track replacement, start times and coordinator; table food-service recommendation

The Gatesville ISD board approved a package of routine and project items at its meeting, including retaining its auditor, approving a vendor for a stadium track replacement, adding an educator-preparation partner to its certification plan, confirming start and end times for the 2026–27 school year and appointing a girls athletic coordinator. The board tabled a food-service contract recommendation until the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) confirms its approval.
Trustees approved the consent agenda without items pulled (minutes of Feb. 23, financial statements through Feb. 28, bills and payrolls, budget amendments, quarterly investment report, vital signs and food-service report). The board voted to continue with Singleton & Clark as the district’s financial auditor for the next audit cycle; staff said the firm did not raise its fee from last year.
Staff reported the district received six proposals in a competitive RFP to replace the running track at McKenney V Stadium. Using an 11-parameter rubric, Hellas scored highest and submitted a bid the district described as within the previously approved fund balance allocation, reported on the record as $299,451; the board approved contracting with Hellas for the project.
On special-education partnerships, Becky (a district staff member) explained Gatesville’s shared agreement with the Temple Regional Day School for the Deaf and said one student is eligible but her parents are choosing to keep her in Gatesville; Becky said tuition for the program runs about $11,000 a year. The board approved staying in the agreement and signing the MOU.
The board also approved adding McLennan Community College (MCC) to the district’s educator-preparation plan via MOU; staff emphasized MCC is an optional pathway for staff seeking certification. Trustees approved proposed daily start and end times for primary through high-school campuses for 2026–27, intended to equalize instructional minutes and to shift starts slightly later so student-athletes can practice in cooler morning hours.
On personnel, staff recommended Philip Martin — head cross country and girls track coach since 2023 and a former collegiate All‑American — be assigned the girls athletic coordinator duties (a stipend-based assignment rather than a new full-time position); the board approved the appointment.
Staff informed trustees that child-nutrition bidding produced multiple qualified proposals but that the district must obtain TDA approval before formally recommending a vendor; the board voted to table the food-service recommendation until staff receives TDA confirmation and returns the item in April.
The board recessed to executive session at the end of the meeting.
