Court approves revised fire-district service-area maps after presentation from county staff

The quorum court voted to approve an ordinance revising fire-district service areas across Marion County. Melissa, the staff presenter, said the edits—many of which have not been updated in more than 20 years—are intended to straighten outer boundaries, follow section lines and roads, reduce access problems, and ensure departments do not have to pass through another district to reach parts of their assigned territory.
She said the changes were negotiated with affected departments and that most chiefs agreed to the updates; Summit and other departments were present to discuss specifics. Examples included moving five or six one-square-mile sections from Bruno into Ralph Kenny's district by mutual agreement and incorporating county roads near Bull Mountain into the Bullsholes district for better access.
Summit representatives raised concerns that repeated reductions to their district could affect ISO testing and firefighter staffing levels; Melissa said parcel lists and poster-size maps would be produced and recorded with the clerk, and state GIS layers would be updated so departments can verify properties and partial parcel numbers.
The court approved the ordinance by voice vote. If the quorum court records the ordinance and the state finalizes mapping, the county will print the maps for fire departments and run parcel reports so each department has an accurate list of properties in its district.
