Warden reports rising work-release numbers, new tablet mail system and staffing strains

On staffing, the warden outlined that several duties previously spread over multiple positions had been consolidated, placing extra burden on the lieutenant role. He said he and Deputy Warden Dan Peterson have “been putting in an extra easily 20 hours on top of our normal workload” since March 2, and argued the lieutenant position should be reposted to fill critical operational duties such as work-release coordination, training coordination, timekeeping, body-camera management and the inmate disciplinary board.
The warden also said that beginning April 1 all incoming inmate mail will be processed through a tablet system (paper mail will be scanned; legal mail, magazines and newspapers will continue as before) as a measure to prevent contraband. The transcript records board agreement to post the lieutenant role internally first and proceed externally if no qualified internal candidates apply; the motion carried by voice vote.
