The Town of Irmo council approved an amendment to the Okra Strut budget on March 17, 2026, increasing the event budget by up to $40,000 to allow the commission to pursue larger headliner entertainment and enhanced attractions.
Don, identified as the Okra Strut commission chair, told council the additional funds would be used to seek higher‑profile acts and listed preferred options discussed by the commission. He said costs vary by performer and that the increase would provide flexibility to secure a headliner. Commission members and council discussed sponsorships, ride options (including a ferris wheel), and the need to evaluate vendor quotes and expected attendance. Staff and commissioners noted that a portion of existing Okra Strut funding comes from exhibitor and vendor sales plus hospitality tax reimbursements.
Council discussed risk and revenue, including whether sponsorships or ride sales could offset the added expense. On roll call the amendment passed with a 4–1 vote (Mr. Pinfield opposed). The council directed the commission to pursue bids and sponsorships and to return with final contracting recommendations.
