The Michigan City Parks and Recreation Board on April 1 amended its employee golf policy to allow employees who work three or more shifts in a pay period to play up to four rounds of golf, including a cart.
Staff explained the change aligns benefit accrual with two‑week payroll accounting: previously the policy tied rounds to weekly shift counts, which could cause employees who worked the end of one pay period to lose eligibility. Board members debated whether to base eligibility on a number of shifts or hours; staff said typical shifts are five to six hours and that the point‑of‑sale and payroll coordinator cross‑checks usage to prevent abuse.
Board members said they compared practices with other local courses and that the amendment is intended to preserve a perk without creating opportunities for misuse. The board approved the amendment and directed staff to update the written policy and point‑of‑sale eligibility rules.
