Somers school district says May 26 will be a makeup day after state waives only Feb. 23

The Somers Central School District announced an update to its school calendar and emergency remote instruction plan, saying the New York State Education Department waived only Monday, Feb. 23, and that the district has now used four emergency-closing days this school year. As a result, Tuesday, May 26, will be converted from a professional learning day into a student instructional makeup day.
District staff told the board the updated emergency remote instruction (ERRI) plan is posted on the district’s website under Academics. The plan allows the district to use ERRI on future emergency-closing days so that those days count toward the state-required 180 school days without requiring additional makeup days.
Board members and staff stressed the ERRI policy is intended to preserve instructional time while avoiding additional makeup days when possible. The district said principals have posted each school’s ERRI schedule on their respective homepages and that families were notified of the calendar changes.
The board framed ERRI as a continuity tool and emphasized the hope that it will be used rarely. The update followed clarification from NYSED about which emergency closings qualified for a waiver under the 180-day requirement.
The board did not provide a formal vote on this administrative calendar change during the workshop; it was presented as an operational update and the ERRI plan is available online for public review.
