Audit and Finance Committee approves reallocations to renovate two high school tennis courts

The Audit and Finance Committee approved a reallocation of capital maintenance savings on April 1, 2026, to fund tennis-court renovations at St. John’s High School and West Ashley High School.

Mr. Ham, a district staff member presenting the item, told the committee the request would take savings from completed facilities projects — Paul Pleasant Academy (HVAC) and Whitesides (doors and hardware) — and redirect them to two athletic projects. “Reallocate them to two athletic projects here in the district. Both of those projects are for tennis court renovations,” he said.

The presentation identified a $400,000 reallocation intended to create the immediate budget needed at St. John’s; the transcript also referenced $2.4 million in the same explanation as the amount for a complete redo of those courts. The committee did not ask questions before voting. A motion to approve the reallocation was made and seconded (Meredith Person identified herself); the motion passed by voice vote with no opposition.

Mr. Ham described the planned timelines: the St. John’s project would start in August and aim to be complete next spring; the West Ashley project would begin after the spring boys tennis season and target completion in time for the girls’ season. He noted that St. John’s currently has two courts that “actually aren’t even being used for tennis” and that the renovation would expand usable courts.

The committee record shows the reallocation was adopted as an action item; staff will proceed with project planning and procurement according to the capital program schedule.

The committee moved on to the next agenda items after the vote; no additional conditions or amendments were stated on the record.
