Community concern as Tyler ISD adopts ADSY calendar and advances Bolter redesign plans

A public commenter urged Tyler ISD trustees to reconsider a planned redesign of Bolter Middle School, saying the district's approach to staffing and the timeline had created uncertainty and would disproportionately affect north-side schools.

Reverend Rodney Curry told the board during public comment that teachers at Bolter were told to reapply and that the process had produced "an environment of havoc" and a hostile workplace at a critical time ahead of testing. "This feels disingenuous and uh it will dis uh disproportionately impact our north side schools," Curry said, asking trustees to relook at the redesign before it is fully implemented.

Separately during the business portion of the meeting, the board approved an Additional Day School Year (ADSY) calendar for Bolter that would allow the district to submit certain extra instructional days to the Texas Education Agency for partial reimbursement. Administration explained the ADSY option would support summer instructional programs and other targeted intervention days; staff estimated partial state reimbursement in the 50% to 75% range for eligible days. The board voted to adopt item A related to the ADSY calendar.

Trustees also authorized the superintendent to sign a curriculum agreement with another district (a curriculum partnership described to the board) intended to provide curricular products and learning-technology support to campuses undergoing transformation. The board approved the curriculum partnership authorization and tabled a separate item (H) for later consideration.

What happens next: Administration will publish the Bolter ADSY calendar and provide it to Bolter staff once adopted; the board will receive additional implementation details, and the public commenter's concerns may be raised again in future meetings as staff work through personnel and scheduling changes.
