City staff lays out FY2026–27 budget schedule and hearing dates

Aaron, speaking for city staff, reviewed the municipal budget schedule required under the municipal budget act and asked commissioners to confirm availability for the proposed dates.
Aaron said the draft budget would be distributed April 28, followed by a study session at the council’s normal meeting time on May 5. He proposed a special meeting the following Thursday at 5:30 p.m. to serve as the statutory budget hearing (with an emphasis on capital improvements), a follow-up meeting on Tuesday, May 12 at 5:30 p.m. to address remaining questions, and a target adoption at the regular council meeting on May 19. If the council is not ready to adopt the budget on May 19, staff requested authority to call a special meeting May 21 to complete action.
Aaron reminded commissioners of statutory notice requirements: the draft must be provided at least 30 days before the new fiscal year, the hearing at least 15 days before the new fiscal year, and the budget filed with the state auditor by June 30. He asked commissioners to notify Gerald or Jody about scheduling conflicts so staff can preserve quorum.
Next steps: Staff will publish the draft April 28, proceed with the meetings as scheduled barring conflicts and return to the commission for formal budget approval.
