DOT approves $1.7 million LMIG award for Lumpin Campground Road and SR 53 intersection, county to provide local match

At a Dawson County work session, Public Works Director Robert Drury said the Georgia Department of Transportation approved Local Maintenance and Improvement Grant (LMIG) funding for upgrades to the Lumpin Campground Road and State Route 53 intersection.
"This is good news," Drury said, adding that the county prepared engineering plans and acquired right-of-way for turn lanes and a complete traffic signal upgrade. He said the current estimated construction cost is $2.8 million and that GDOT’s participation is listed at $1,717,550, or 70% of the construction cost (whichever is less). Drury said the roughly 30% local match remains required and that construction plans are essentially complete.
The project, Drury said, aligns with GDOT’s original concept and would add turn lanes on Lumpin Campground Road and upgrade the traffic signal. "We briefly brought it up two weeks ago," he said, and staff anticipates soliciting bids by the end of spring. Drury told the board the schedule will depend on weather and how much work can be completed before winter.
Commissioner Gaines thanked staff for securing the additional funding and called the development "a pretty big deal" for a long-troubled intersection. Board members asked about timing and public impacts; one commissioner cautioned the project "is going to be a mess" during construction and said it likely will not be completed this year.
The agenda packet included the GDOT commitment letter and a concept plan. The county did not specify the department or fund that will supply the local match during the work session.
Next steps: staff said it will solicit bids by the end of spring and return to the board as procurement and scheduling proceed. The county did not take a formal vote on the project at the work session.
