Radford City School Board honors students, approves spring calendar and semiquincentennial resolution, and moves to closed session

At its March meeting, the Radford City School Board opened with a student showcase, recognized student achievements and completed several routine governance actions.

Students from Bell Heath Elementary presented on the school's house system and upcoming community events, including a school clean-up scheduled for April 11. The board acknowledged regional science-fair winners and a William Fleming High School band distinction earned for an overall superior rating.

The board adopted a resolution declaring April 2026 as America's semiquincentennial month and committed district schools to themed curricular and civic activities. By voice vote the board also approved next year's school calendar (the committee-favored draft that adds two potential make-up days and retains flexible teacher work days).

Other actions included adoption of a school-board member code-of-conduct policy (BBBD/BBBDF as amended), approval of a pledge document for board members to sign, and authorization to dispose of surplus equipment. The board moved to a closed session under Virginia Code §2.2-3711(A)(1) to discuss personnel matters and student admissions; after returning to open session the board certified compliance with the code and approved personnel recommendations and a tuition student admission as presented by Dr. Joyce.

Staff also announced that ZMM was identified as the vendor of choice to perform a facilities needs assessment (RFP 12-20225) with a report expected by June; the presentation to the board described the vendor selection but the public record in the transcript does not show a separate, recorded contract-award vote.

The board scheduled a formal vote on the division's 2026—2027 budget proposal for its March 24 meeting and confirmed the division will submit the proposal to the city for that body's statutory review and readings.
