The Radford City School Board opened its March 24 meeting with recognition of several winter sports teams and a student presentation that drew board praise and community support.
Athletic Director Mr. Greg Wade introduced indoor track competitors and a state champion; coach steel and athletes described school-record performances and state placements. Coach Martin reported a strong wrestling season with 10 state qualifiers and multiple medalists, including Cole Martin, a back-to-back state champion at 190 pounds. Coach Roland and swimmers described a season that produced a state runner-up finish for the girls' team for the fifth consecutive year; multiple students listed individual event placements.
Fifth grader Esme Davis of Bell Heath Elementary outlined the Clean Community Club (CCC), a volunteer cleanup set for April 11 at 10:00 a.m. starting at Bell Heath Elementary. Davis said volunteers of all ages can participate and the effort will use the Stridey smartphone app so participants can log cleanups and earn points toward a friendly school competition. She thanked the Radford City Police Department for providing gloves and trash bags and encouraged community volunteers.
Board members and staff praised the students and said they would publicize the event and support volunteer outreach. Several board members noted they had seen Davis present the same idea to the city council and commended her leadership.
