The Lamar City Council on March 17 scheduled a public hearing for April 7, 2026, at noon to consider changes to speed limits on Highway 3 West recommended by the Iowa Department of Transportation. The Public Safety Committee had reviewed requests to reduce speeds near the Little League ball fields and Park View Terrace, and the DOT offered proposed speed limits that administration said accomplish the committee’s safety goals.
Staff explained that because the posted speeds are in the city code, the council must amend the municipal ordinance to implement the DOT’s recommendations; the city will then confirm the ordinance change to DOT so the agency can install new signs under its jurisdiction. Council members discussed potential future development in Parkview Estates and how reduced speeds might affect safety and development.
Council moved and set April 7 as the public hearing date by voice vote. The hearing will allow public input before the council takes further action to change local ordinance language and request DOT signage updates.
