Board approves 2026–27 international school trips; trustees stress safety protocols and fundraising plans

The board voted to approve four international student trips proposed for 2026–27: a Beijing summer program, a Madrid exchange, a multi-country Latin tour (Italy, France, Sicily, Greece) and a Moroccan tour. Administrators said most trips are being funded through student fundraising, family contributions and host-family exchange scholarships; the Beijing opportunity was described as supported by a benefactor identified in the packet.

Dr. Brown introduced the proposals and said trips are curriculum-driven and often organized by world-language staff. Trustees praised the educational value — particularly for language learning and equity when scholarships enable students who could not otherwise travel — but also pressed administrators about safety. Officials said they monitor U.S. State Department advisories, adjust or cancel itineraries if advisories change, and follow internal safety protocols. One trustee asked for clearer public communications to reassure families about contingency planning.

The board moved, seconded and approved the international travel item by roll call. The district packet and administrators note that fundraising (t-shirt and popcorn sales, foundation donations and family contributions) will offset costs, and the Madrid trip will receive additional host-family exchange scholarship support.

Administrators also mentioned a longer-term conversation about a donor’s interest in establishing an ETHS-like school in China; trustees said that would require future review and legal work before any formal district decision.

The motion passed; the board did not approve any trips contingent on new funding at the meeting beyond noting fundraising plans and donor support.
