Taos County to administer $2 million weatherization grant; plan aims to serve 950 homes

Taos County will be the recipient of $2 million from a $10 million statewide weatherization grant program, county officials said on March 3. Christopher Madrid, deputy county manager, said Kit Carson Electric was selected to serve as the grant administrator and that the county’s approach emphasizes breadth: crews will touch approximately 950 homes to perform blower-door assessments and deliver weatherization measures such as insulation, heat-pump adjustments and lighting changes.
"We're expecting that each homeowner will save about 20% on their utility bills going forward," Madrid said, adding that the county also secured an additional $500,000 to enable deeper interventions for some properties. Madrid said the program targets low-income households (cap set at twice the poverty rate) and prioritizes seniors and families with young children. He said four staff members were already hired and in training and that the first homes would be addressed toward the end of March.
The county said it will work with local nonprofits and community partners to identify eligible households and expedite enrollment for residents who participate in SNAP, LIHEAP or Medicaid, who are already pre-qualified for the program.
