County hears plan for large canopy and site work at agricultural center ahead of fair

Taos County commissioners heard a presentation on March 3 proposing a new steel canopy over stock pens at the Taos County Agricultural Center, along with regrading, rebuilt pens, new drainage and a concrete wash area. The design team said the canopy would match the existing building slope and that the work would improve livestock washing and event operations.
"We're proposing to remove the stock pens and rebuild them, lower that grade, rebuild the stock pens, regrade around the building, and then provide that steel canopy structure to provide shade," said Mr. Peterson, the project presenter. Commissioners asked about loading access and whether paving or additional site improvements (including RV hookups and water/sewer connections) could be added in later phases; staff said a short construction cycle constrained some elements but that additional site upgrades would be considered next year.
Presenters said the goal is to have the canopy and related improvements in place before the upcoming county fair so livestock events and loading operations will be improved.
