Taos County approves Phase 3 contract for plaza renovation; work to start March 16

The Taos County Board of Commissioners on March 3 approved a contract (TCC 2026-8) to begin Phase 3 of the TA Plaza renovation, which designers and county staff said will remove old brick pavers, regrade sidewalks, add irrigation-fed planters and update lighting.
"The goal of all that work was really to remove any barriers to people accessing the memorial," said Doug Patterson of Living Designs Group Architects during a presentation to the commission. Patterson described removing perimeter curbs and portions of the platform walls around the veterans memorial to create a larger, more accessible gathering area while keeping the memorial structure, plaques and flags in place. He said the contractor is ready to start March 16 and expects about a 90-day construction window with an objective to complete work before summer events.
County staff said the project includes new hanger-arm lights configured to support planter irrigation hookups and that IT will install security cameras after construction so they can integrate with courthouse infrastructure. Commissioners asked about sidewalk ownership and assurances that the veterans memorial would remain in place amid rumors in the community; Patterson and county officials said there were no plans to remove the memorial.
The motion to approve TCC 2026-8 was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote. County procurement and project staff said they will issue notices to downtown merchants and coordinate events calendars to reduce impacts while construction proceeds.
