Students describe inclusive-language work as district highlights academics and arts

Two student representatives described work by the district’s student mental health and PRC advisory committees at the March 10 board meeting, highlighting efforts to promote inclusive language, anti-bullying initiatives and trust-building activities.

Maggie Heitland, an eighth grader at Shaw Heights Middle School, said the committee compiled short "person brain snapshots" and a list of encouraging phrases for students to use with peers. "These are examples of things that we can say to our friends and peers that can help them feel more included and more positive," Maggie said.

Anna Guavara Hernandez, a Level 7 student at Orchard Park Academy, said the group developed identity boards to help teachers understand students’ needs and described trust-building activities intended to increase students’ sense of safety and belonging.

Superintendent Dr. Gateto used his report to frame these student experiences within the district’s Destination 2030 strategy. He recognized ProStart students for earning third place in state competition, announced students traveling to France, and named extracurricular achievements in band, orchestra and mariachi. He also noted the district’s bond oversight committee had its first meeting to provide transparency for a bond described in the report as a "100 million $111 million bond."

Student ambassador Fernanda Galvin reported on recent student-led activities, including Westy’s Wish Week fundraising ("We were able to raise $9,000," she said) and several upcoming events including prom (April 11) and performing-arts showcases.

Board members praised student participation and recommended continued family engagement and follow-up forums with students. The district encouraged the public to attend upcoming performances and events cited in the meeting.
